Interview With Mary Katrantzou

Η Μαίρη Κατράντζου δεν χρειάζεται συστάσεις. Αλλωστε είναι πολλά τα άρθρα που έχουν γραφτεί για αυτήν από το διεθνή τύπο και μέρα με τη μέρα αυξάνονται.  

Η νεαρή σχεδιάστρια αρχικά σπούδασε στο Rhode Island School of Design για να γίνει αρχιτέκτονας, στην πορεία όμως την κέρδισε o χώρος της μόδας και συνεχίζει τις σπουδές της στο γνωστό St. Martins στο Λονδίνο πλέον. Δουλεύει κοντά σε γνωστούς σχεδιαστές μόδας - Bill Blass, Sophia Kokosalaki και πολλούς άλλους - και ξεκινάει τρία χρόνια τώρα τη δική της ομώνυμη κολεξιόν από ρούχα που φέρουν έντονα prints με ένα πρωτοποριακό τρόπο και μέθοδο. 

Γνωρίσαμε την Μαίρη Κατράντζου από κοντά για να της πάρουμε συνέντευξη την ημέρα της έκθεσης και παρουσιάσης στη Θεσσαλονίκη στο κέντρο NOESIS. Είναι ιδιαίτερα φιλική και γλυκιά από κοντά, κάτι που σε κερδίζει αμέσως, πολύ προσιτή κι ας είχε έρθει σε ένα ταξίδι αστραπή εν μέσω πυρετωδούς προετοιμασίας για το επικείμενο London Fashion Week, ανεπηρέαστη από τον διεθνή σάλο που έχει γίνει για το μαγικό της ταλέντο.

Mary Katrantzou does not need any introductions. After all, there are so many articles which have been written about her and which are increasing in number on a daily basis.
The young designer originally studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, however, along the way, the world of fashion won her over and so she carried on her studies at London’s famous St. Martins. She has worked close to many famous fashion designers – Bill Blass, Sophia Kokosalaki and many more – and launched her own collection of clothes which display bold prints in an innovative method, three years ago, under her own name.

We met up with Mary Katrantzou and secured this interview on the day of her show in Thessaloniki at the NOESIS Centre. She’s particularly sweet and friendly up close and that wins you over immediately, and very approachable even though her trip was quick and short as she’s manically preparing for London Fashion Week and she seems totally unaffected by the international fuss her magical talent has caused.
We’re really pleased to present her answers to our questions.

• Οι φίλες της starbags ρωτούν αν πέρα από ρούχα και παπούτσια μπορούν να περιμένουν να δουν και τσάντες σχεδιασμένες από την Μαίρη Κατράντζου.
  Ναι, βεβαίως πολύ σύντομα! Θα ξεκινήσω μία συνεργασία με την Longchamp και θα παρουσιάσουμε μία σειρά τσαντών Pliage με prints δικά μου. Αρχές Οκτωβρίου θα μπορούν να δουν τη νέα συλλογή.  
• Οταν μεγάλωνες κι έπαιζες με τις Barbies όπως μας έλεγες, φαντάστηκες ότι όταν μεγάλωνες  θα γινόσουν σχεδιάστρια μόδας και μάλιστα μια τόσο επιτυχημένη;
  Ποτέ! Ούτε να γίνω σχεδιάστρια φανταζόμουν - ήθελα να γίνω αρχιτέκτονας - ούτε όταν ξεκίνησα τελικά να ασχολούμαι με τη μόδα ήξερα τότε στην αρχή ότι θα πήγαινα καλά. Μάλιστα, αν ήξερα τότε που ξεκινούσα τις δυσκολίες που έχει ο χώρος, τις υψηλές οικονομικές απαιτήσεις καθώς η κάθε συλλογή για να πραγματοποιηθεί χρειάζεται πολλά χρήματα, δεν θα το τολμούσα καν. Η άγνοια του χώρου και των δυσκολιών που έχει με βοήθησε να προχωρήσω και να μην αποθαρρυνθώ.
   
• Οι πελάτισσές μας ενδιαφέρονται να ακούσουν από σένα, την ίδια τη δημιουργό αυτών των εντυπωσιακών και μοναδικών φορεμάτων τρόπους που μπορούν αυτά τα φορέματα να φορεθούν πάνω από μία φορά καθώς οι περισσότερες "ανησυχούν" ότι μένουν "αξέχαστα".
  Εχουν δίκιο, είναι όντως δύσκολο να μην τα προσέξει κανείς και να μην τα θυμηθεί αν τα ξαναδεί φορεμένα (γέλια). Θα πρότεινα στις πελάτισσες της starbags να στραφούν στα separates κομμάτια της συλλογής όπως είναι τα πουκάμισα που μπορούν να φορεθούν ξανά και ξανά με διαφορετικά παντελόνια και φούστες την κάθε φορά  ή τα φουλάρια που επίσης έχουν τα prints της κάθε συλλογής και δίνουν χρώμα κι ενδιαφέρον στο ντύσιμό τους.

• Our Starbags friends would like to know if, other than clothes and shoes, they can expect to see bags designed by Mary Katrantzou.
  Yes, of course, very soon! I’m going to collaborate with Longchamp and launch a range of Pliage bags in my own prints. At the beginning of October, they will be able to view the new collection. 

 

• When you were younger and playing with your Barbies, as you have told us, did you ever think that when you grew up you would be a fashion designer and such a successful one at that? Never! I never thought I would be a designer – I wanted to be an architect – nor when I finally started working in fashion did I believe that I would do so well. In fact, if I had known when I was starting out how difficult this field is, the expense of it, as every collection needs a lot of money to become a reality, I would not have dared to become involved. My ignorance about this field and its difficulties helped me move along in it and to not give up.

• Our clients would like to hear from you, the actual designer of these impressive and unique dresses, ways they can wear them so they can wear them more than once as many fear they will remain ‘’unforgettable’’.
  They are right. It’s hard to not notice them and to not remember them if they see them worn again (she laughs). I would advise the Starbags’ clients to opt for separate pieces such as the shirts which they can wear again and again with different trousers or skirts, or the scarves which also bear the prints from each collection and always add colour and interest to an outfit.
